The stats pages were developed in June, 1998, when we first learned of PKD and the potentially high frequency of persians affected. The first clinics out of Texas in April 1998 indicated approximately 30% of persians being tested had PKD. As other clinics started in other areas of the country, I asked them to report the results so we could attempt to validate the early numbers from Texas. The intent was to capture positives vs negatives where the status of the parents were "unknown", i.e. random testing.
After a year of testing and clinics it has become virtually impossible to isolate "random testing" from testing offspring of pkd positive foundation cats. Including offspring of known positives would falsely inflate the percentage of cats affected by this disease.
The numbers presented on these stats pages do not begin to represent the number of cats or catteries who have been tested today. What they DO represent are the breeders who became involved "from the beginning" and who chose to share their results with us.
For listings of catteries who have and/or are testing their cats for PKD, please visit Persian PKD Referral List
I will continue to capture/report results of random testing from other breeds or other countries as they become available.
